Endogenous Cannabinoid Analysis Service

Endocannabinoids are amphipathic molecules synthesized from phospholipids in the nervous system. They form the endocannabinoid system together with G-protein coupled receptors. The most extensively studied endocannabinoids are N-arachidonoylethanolamide (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). They consist of an amide or ester head connected to an arachidonoyl chain. Endocannabinoids exert their physiological activities mainly by binding to cannabinoid receptors or TRP channels. Endocannabinoids are associated with various membrane proteins in the presence of their classical receptor antagonists, suggesting that they can mediate physiological activities in a receptor-independent manner.

Endocannabinoids have been shown to regulate a wide range of physiological and cognitive processes, including fertility, pregnancy, pre- and postnatal development, motor control, appetite, food intake, nociception, mood, memory acquisition, and learning. In humans, exercise has been shown to induce an increase in plasma levels of endocannabinoids, as they can effectively cross the blood-brain barrier and contribute to the development of exercise-induced euphoria. Dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system is associated with several neuroinflammatory diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Due to the low abundance and structural variability of endocannabinoids, quantification of them is challenging.
