Plant metabolomics is an important branch of metabolomics, defined as metabolomics targeting plants as research subjects. It involves the qualitative and quantitative analysis of all small-molecule metabolites in plants of different species, genetic types, or ecological types at different growth stages or before and after certain stimuli, to identify patterns of metabolic changes. To survive in constantly changing and harsh environments, plants have evolved complex, multicellular structures with different functional organs. These organs contain various cell types, which shift their metabolic mechanisms to precisely achieve their specific functions. The influences of environment, temperature, and seasons are compensated through metabolic changes. Due to the stress from abiotic factors (light, UV, water) and biotic factors (pests, parasites, and pathogen attacks), plants derive a complex library of metabolic compounds. These include primary metabolites essential for plant life activities and growth, as well as secondary metabolites closely related to plant disease resistance and stress tolerance.

1. Sample Preservation
For plant tissue samples where metabolites cannot be extracted immediately after sampling, ultra-low temperature preservation (-80°C) is required; sample transportation should be under dry ice conditions.

Case: Polyphenol Extraction
Plant polyphenols are a class of polyphenolic compounds widely present in plants, mainly found in the bark, roots, wood, leaves, and fruits. Due to differences in their internal composition structures and properties, solvent extraction is usually used. Polyphenolic substances contain hydroxyl groups in their structures, giving them some polarity. Therefore, water, low-carbon alcohols, ethyl acetate, and acetone are all viable solvents.
