ICP-MS Trace Element Detection
Trace elements such as arsenic, chromium, cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, lead, and molybdenum, although present in very small amounts in organisms, are essential for their growth, development, and physiological functions. Despite their small quantities, both deficiency and excessive intake of these elements can adversely affect health. Copper, iron, and molybdenum are essential for life activities but can be toxic at concentrations beyond a certain threshold. Chromium, lead, and arsenic are known carcinogens, while mercury is harmful to the nervous system. Due to their bioactivity and potential toxicity, monitoring and understanding the levels of these elements in the environment and organisms are crucial.
Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is an inorganic mass spectrometry technique that can simultaneously measure many elements. It separates and detects elemental ions based on their mass-to-charge ratios and is widely used for the identification and concentration measurement of elements in samples. ICP-MS can perform qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative analyses of one or more elements in a sample, with a mass range of 3-300 atomic units, a resolution of less than 1 atomic unit, and the capability to measure 90% of the elements in the periodic table. Most detection limits are in the range of 0.1-10 µg/mL, with an effective measurement range spanning 6 orders of magnitude and a standard deviation of 2%-4%. Each element measurement takes 10 seconds, making it very suitable for simultaneous multi-element analysis.
