What type of gel should be used for gel electrophoresis?
Many types of polyacrylamide gels are compatible with MS analysis, including traditional Tris-Glycine gels, as well as many brands of commercially available pre-cast gels such as Novex NuPAGE Bis-Tris and Tris-Acetate gels. For protein identification, we did not observe any significant effects caused by different percentages or thicknesses of gels or gradient gels. However, based on our experience, we recommend avoiding the use of Tricine gels for protein identification.
