Overall, quadrupole TOF and Orbitrap mass spectrometers have higher resolution than MALDI-TOFs. While the resolution of the mass spectrometer is certainly important, the quality of the protein sample is also a critical factor affecting experimental results. This includes successful protein extraction and enrichment, consistent protein hydrolysis digestion, and sufficient separation of the resulting peptides to minimize co-elution.
