Linear Ion Trap Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry (LTQ-Orbitrap MS)
The hybrid linear ion trap Orbitrap mass spectrometer is one of the hybrid instruments based on Fourier transform. The first mass analyzer is a linear ion trap (LIT), and the second is a high-resolution Orbitrap. Since LIT itself is a detector, the LIT-Orbitrap combination can be used for MS and MSn experiments.
To utilize the highest resolution of the Orbitrap analyzer, the data acquisition time of both the LIT and FT analyzers must be considered. The ion capture capability and the high data acquisition speed of the LIT allow for the collection of MS/MS spectra of selected precursor ions, while transferring part of the precursor to the Orbitrap for precise mass measurement. Different collision methods can be used in the second collision cell at different collision energies for additional dissociation. Products from either collision cell are injected into the Orbitrap through the C-trap, and transient signals are collected in the Orbitrap for subsequent FT analysis.
