Resveratrol is a non-flavonoid polyphenolic compound, belonging to the stilbenoid class of compounds, and acts as a phytoalexin. Its main role in plants is to help them resist bacterial or fungal invasion. Resveratrol is found in high amounts in the skins of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, and plants of the Cassia genus. It is an important dietary supplement with roles in heart disease, metabolism, and lifespan extension. Key metabolites of resveratrol include trans-resveratrol, cis-resveratrol, trans-piceid, and cis-piceid. These metabolites play significant roles in the treatment of various diseases, such as piceid, which is extracted from the plant Japanese Knotweed and used to modulate blood lipids, lower cholesterol, act as a cough suppressant, and provide shock resistance.
