What is 2D-Gel Electrophoresis?
Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (commonly referred to as 2D-Gel electrophoresis) separates proteins based on their isoelectric points and molecular weights. This technique enhances the resolution of protein separation. In 2D-Gel electrophoresis, proteins first move along a set pH gradient. Then, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is used to separate proteins in a vertical or horizontal mode. Therefore, in the second dimension, proteins are separated according to their molecular weight. Additionally, using this gel electrophoresis method improves the resolution of protein separation, resulting in purer proteins. The cost of this method is significantly higher than one-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
