GPC Method for Determining Polymer Molecular Weight and Molecular Weight Distribution
Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) is a technique used to determine the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers. It is based on the separation of polymer molecules in a gel.
1. Working Principle
1. The sample solution passes through a chromatography column filled with porous gel. Large molecules cannot enter the gel pores and thus pass through the column more quickly, while small molecules can enter the gel pores and therefore pass through the column more slowly.
2. By detecting the elution volume of the sample (i.e., the time it takes for the sample to pass through the column), the relative size of the molecules can be determined. Typically, GPC can provide information about molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.
2. Data Acquisition
Samples are usually solutions and can be prepared by dissolving or extracting polymers. After passing through the chromatography column, the sample's concentration is detected using detectors like UV absorption or refractive index detectors, further providing molecular weight and molecular weight distribution data.
3. Data Analysis
1. The obtained GPC data will show the relationship between the elution volume and sample concentration. Each peak corresponds to a specific size of molecules.
2. By comparing with known polymer standards, the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the sample can be determined.
4. Applications
1. Polymer Identification
GPC can be used to identify unknown polymers by comparing them with data from known polymers.
2. Reaction Studies
By measuring GPC data before and after a reaction, changes in polymer molecular weight during the reaction can be understood.
3. Material Property Studies
Such as high polymer materials, polymer materials, etc.
4. Quality Control
In industrial production, GPC can be used to quickly check if the molecular weight of products meets the standards.
5. Advantages
1. Fast
Most GPC analyses only take tens of minutes.
2. Non-destructive
Samples are usually not damaged.
3. Sensitivity and Resolution
GPC provides high sensitivity and high-resolution data on molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.
