Hexosamine Ceramide
Sphingolipids are fundamental structural components of cell membranes, forming lipid rafts through interaction with other components. They are involved in regulating biological processes such as cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. Ceramide is a central hub in the sphingolipid pathway, including sphingomyelin, glucosylceramide, and galactosylceramide, primarily categorized into hexosylceramide (HexCer), lactosylceramide (LacCer), sphingosine (Sph), dihydrosphingosine (DhSph), and dihydroceramide (DhSph).
The level of hexosylceramide (HexCer) changes under different physiological, pathological, and disease conditions. Studies have shown that HexCer levels change during brain aging. Additionally, increased sphingolipids derived from hexosylceramide have been found in the cerebrospinal fluid of multiple sclerosis patients. Plasma hexosylceramide has also been significantly modulated in chronic hepatitis C, making it a good biomarker for the disease.
