Differentially Expressed Proteins
Differentially expressed proteins refer to proteins whose expression levels change significantly under different biological samples or treatment conditions. Observing these differential expressions is crucial for understanding cellular physiology and disease mechanisms. For instance, certain proteins may be upregulated or downregulated between healthy and diseased states, or between normal and treated cells.
1. Detection Methods:
The most commonly used technique is mass spectrometry, particularly liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Additionally, two-dimensional electrophoresis and Western blot are also frequently employed to study differential protein expression.
2. Quantification Methods:
Both labeled and label-free quantification strategies can be used to measure protein abundance in different samples to identify which proteins are differentially expressed.
3. Biological Significance:
Differentially expressed proteins can provide crucial insights into biological processes, cellular pathways, or diseases. For example, some differentially expressed proteins may be related to disease progression, drug response, or cellular stress responses.
4.Applications:
The study of differentially expressed proteins has applications in many fields, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders. They can also serve as disease biomarkers or drug targets.

Research on differentially expressed proteins is a core area of proteomics, providing valuable information about the functions and states of cells and tissues under various conditions.
